The flower so popular that is also bears national recognition every December 12th for National Poinsettia Day! It is a tradition all of it’s own.
With the return of the holiday season, certain things are a given. Lights on houses, Christmas trees adorning many living rooms, covered in ornaments and lights, nativity scenes in yards and church lots, and the list continues on and on. What do you do every year? Poinsettias have been used with Christmas tradition ever since the 16th century in Mexico. The story says that a little girl was not able to provide a present for Jesus’ birthday and was told to gather weeds from the roadside and place them on the altar of the church. Crimson “blossoms” then sprouted from these weeds producing beautiful flowers. Franciscan friars in Mexico have also been known to have used these gorgeous decorations since the 17th century.
